To Kill a Mockingbird

Why is it a sin to kill a mockingbird? I hate mockingbirds. The man that made the mockingbird the state bird of Texas was a sick bastard. We have a whole family of them in our neighborhood, and they sing constantly. They've picked up cat sounds, car alarm sounds, songs of other birds, yippy dog sounds, and of course their own irritating songs. One male bird lives in the tree outside our bedroom window, and the stupid little fucker insists on breaking into song every night promptly at 1 a.m. 1 a.m.! Every night I'm more and more tempted to put an end to it with the .410 under my bed. But then there's the whole problem of neighbors and noise and city gun laws. *sigh*

Hubby and I watched HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY last night. It's weird but funny. Kinda like Spaceballs meets Monty Python. I love Zooey Deschanel, so it was worth it.

I found a new e-book publisher yesterday! The Wild Rose Press. Well, they're probably not new, but they're new to me. I bought two short stories (one M/F and one M/F/M) and one super-short (M/F) from them. The super-short story was COWBOY by Delilah Devlin. Verrry hot, and only $1.50. That one is available from their Wilder Roses category, under which they publish their erotic romances. The two short stories were DOUBLE DEUTSCH by Shayla Kersten and BURN BABY BURN by Lynne Logan. I'll let y'all know how I like those. I'm very excited to have found a new place to shop! I don't see any M/M there, but they do carry some popular M/F authors. And be sure to check out the Books & Shopping tab on my left sidebar. I added a bunch of e-book publishers this week. I haven't had time to try them all, so let me know which ones have good stuff (not that I need more books or anything).

Oh hey, I ordered another horror book last night! It's called MOONFALL by Tamara Thorne. It looks creepy without being too horrifying or nasty. Here's the blurb:

Sara Hawthorne returns to her picturesque hometown of Moonfall, where the antique stores and craft shops are run by the nuns of St. Gertrude's Home for Girls. Twelve years before, a woman died a horrible death at the Home. Now, in Sara's old room, distant voices and the tormented cries of children shatter the night. That's just the beginning, however, for Sara is about to uncover the hellish secret of St. Gertrude's.
I've still never read a real horror book (haven't had the guts to open the Clive Barker book I bought over the weekend), but this one looks good.

I'm still reading KNIGHT OF A TRILLION STARS. I haven't had much time to read in the evenings so it's going reeeeeally slowly, but hopefully I'll have it finished by Saturday so I can start something new.

By the way, go check out Kiwi Sarah's blog. She posted a cool video review of SHELTER, my favorite M/M movie of all time.

I went shopping!

Thanks to everyone that wished me a happy birthday. Yesterday was really fun. We had a nice dinner at P.F. Chang's last night, and then I suckered my family into going to Borders and Half Price Books. All in all, a fantastic 27th birthday. I couldn't have asked for better. :)

Oh, bad news. My mom cancelled the burial plots. :( She said they were in a "bad" section of the cemetery. Do cemeteries have bad areas? Are those like bad neighborhoods? Would we be buried by crooks and thieves and unsavory characters? Oh, and the lady that sold her the plots was "snotty". That sucks. I'm sad.

I've bought tons of books since last Friday. I spent lots of time at Half Price Books over the weekend and yesterday (coupons and other people's money! woohoo!). I bought some cute, cheesy romances, and some real oldies. Even a horror book and a couple of Dreaded Historicals (and westerns...my weakness):
  • ONE REAL COWBOY and ONE REAL MAN by Janette Kenny (historical western romance)
  • WILD THING anthology by Maggie Shayne, Marjorie M. Liu, Meljean Brook, and Alyssa Day (PNR)
  • HEARTMATE by Robin D. Owens (sci-fi romance)
  • BOOKS OF BLOOD: VOL 2 by Clive Barker (horror...recommended by Ally Blue...I'm scared to read it!)
  • WICKED NIGHTS by Nina Bangs (PNR...I already owned this in trade size, but I prefer mass market pb)
  • FANTASY anthology by Christine Feehan, Sabrina Jeffries, Emma Holly, and Elda Minger (PNR? Historical romance? I bought it for the Christine Feehan book, the first in her Leopard series. Dunno anything about the others.)
  • McKETTRICK'S LUCK by Linda Lael Miller (contemporary western romance)
  • HIDDEN HONOR by Anne Stuart (Medieval romance with a nasty gamma hero)
  • KISS OF CRIMSON by Lara Adrian (PNR...first in this series was a DNF for me, but I hear this second book is much better)
  • THE LAUGHING CORPSE by Laurell K. Hamilton (PNR...#2 Anita Blake book)
I didn't get a single M/M book at the bookstores this weekend. That's practically unheard of for me! I still have at least ten M/M e-books that I haven't read, and at least twice as many unread M/M print books as well (two of which I just ordered last week), so this weekend I didn't even bother visiting the GLBT section. I know, I was shocked too!

Right now I'm reading an old sci-fi/futuristic romance classic, KNIGHT OF A TRILLION STARS by Dara Joy, and I love it. It's funny, silly, cheesy, incredibly sexy, and just plain fun. It's an amazingly quick read, too. I'm nearly half-way through it, and then I plan to jump right into the sequel, REJAR. Rejar is an important supporting character in KNIGHT OF A TRILLION STARS, and he's super hot. He's a sexy shape-shifting kitty. Meow! I can't wait to read his book.

I also watched a fabulous anime movie this weekend. It's called HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, and it was based on the YA fantasy novel of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones. It's sooooo good. Miyazaki adapted it into a gorgeous animated film that I enjoyed even better than SPIRITED AWAY (also by Miyazaki). The animation is absolutely stunning, the voice talents are wonderful (Christian Bale as Howl!!!), and the story is fabulous. It's much less confusing than SPIRITED AWAY, and I thought the story was sweeter. It's kind of like a frog prince story, and maybe even Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty in some ways, with a bit of Wizard of Oz. Click on the link to read about it. I can't even describe it properly. HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE is a movie that you must have in your collection if you're a fan of animated films. It's great for kids, but I think even better for adults who can appreciate the artistic talent involved in making the film. I might even be tempted to read the book one of these days. *gasp* Okay, so we all know I probably won't read the book after watching the film (I never do...*sigh*), but you can be sure I'll pimp it out to all my YA reader friends. That counts for something, right? ;)

So, um...I think that's all I wanted to say today. I'm sure that's all you wanted to read, right? :) What books have you bought lately? Have you read anything wonderful or awful? Have you read any of the books I bought this weekend? Got any more anime recommendations for me?

BTW, check out my sidebars on the left. I made a few changes and added some more e-book publishers (like any of us need more places to buy books).

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

I was planning to talk about a couple of books today, but work has been kicking my ass all day and I haven't had time to do anything fun. Boo hoo. Why did my birthday have to fall on a Monday? *whines*

But it wasn't all bad. My co-workers decorated my office with a Little Mermaid theme. They also put flower leis and plastic sea creatures all over my desk. So I can actually say that on my 27th birthday I got lei'd and I got crabs. Little Mermaid toys? Plastic crabs? My very own cemetary plot? Oh yes, these are the things happy birthdays are made of. *twirls*

Ooooh, plus I got a Little Mermaid coloring book (with Crayola crayons, only the best), a Little Mermaid fuzzy blanket, a Little Mermaid lunch box, plastic Little Mermaid dishes, and a Little Mermaid sippy cup (no, these presents weren't jokes...I really do love the Little Mermaid)! And my boss gave me $20 to spend at Half Price Books, which I promptly spent on some extra-cheesy romance novels and a Harry Potter DVD.

Tonight my husband and my parents are taking me to P.F. Chang's, my very favorite Chinese restaurant. Yummm. Then you can bet I'll try to sweet-talk someone into taking me to another bookstore.

All in all, a very happy birthday. :)

Tomorrow I'll do a normal post. Er...well...as "normal" as they ever are.

Blah Blah Blah

I finished WICKED GENTLEMEN last night! After nine months of waiting and waffling over whether or not to buy the book, then two weeks of reading extra slowly and putting off the ending (it's hard for me to read a book that I've hyped up in my mind for nearly a year, no matter how great it is), I finally finished those last ten pages last night. Whew. Done. It is one of the most solid and beautiful books I've ever read, and it's now a DIK for me.

But...I don't have a review for you today. :( It's been a crazy week and I just can't get my thoughts together, so I've decided to try something different if y'all are up for it. Since I'm having a hard time coming up with a review, why don't y'all email me some questions today and tomorrow and I can do some kind of Q&A review. Would that work? You can post them in the comments, ask them on the M/M Yahoo group, or shoot an email to blueroses99[at]hotmail[dot]com.

I bought a couple more e-books yesterday, even though I swore all week I wouldn't buy any more until I finish the ones I already own but still haven't read. But who am I kidding? I have no willpower when it comes to books. I bought LUNCH BREAK by J. M. Snyder (one of those sexy little WORKING MAN stories she writes for Aspen Mountain Press...already read it...very hot), LONG HARD RIDE by Lorelai Long (it's M/M/M/F...yucky girl cooties...but also cowboys!! yum!), and IF WISHES WERE HORSES by Sarah Leslie. I read that one last night before bedtime, and I loved it! It's sweet, funny, sexy, and just really fun. It's a cool, unique M/M take on the Cinderella and fairy godmother story, set in the world of the fey. I highly recommend it, and I can't wait for more books in that same world.

A couple of books on my PaperBackSwap wish list were posted this week, so I should be getting those in the mail soon. I ordered BEST GAY ROMANCE 2008 and STANDISH by Erastes. The first book is just an anthology of short M/M romance stories. Most of the gay anthologies I own in print are strictly erotica and porn, so the romance anthology should be a nice change. I've had STANDISH on my wish list since I signed up for PBS back in August of last year. It's a Dreaded Historical, but it gets rave reviews, and it looks interesting (and hot). It's pretty much required reading for M/M romance fans, so I can't really get away with not reading it, you know? Plus, Erastes is a really cool author and is one of the biggest names of the genre. She's well respected and knowledgeable, and she's kind and helpful to her fans. That alone makes me want to give it a shot.

I ordered a copy of A STRONG AND SUDDEN THAW by R. W. Day last night. It's a post-apocalyptic M/M fantasy romance, and it looks pretty cool. It's certainly not my usual fare, so I'm looking forward to reading it.

Oh, and check out today's post on Kiwi Sarah's blog. She reviewed STRONGMAN by Denise Rossetti. Her reviews are always fabulous (and peppered with pics of super hot men...meow), and the book looks really good. From what Sarah says, it's definitely not your everyday read. Sarah has great taste in books, so I think I'll have to check this one out.

In weirder news, my mom called this morning to let me know that she bought a block of six cemetary plots in the tiny Oklahoma town where she and my dad grew up. She was only going to buy two (for her and my dad), but she got a "great deal" on the entire block. Ummm...what do I say to that? "Thanks" doesn't quite seem appropriate. OMG, my family cracks me up. Most families would have scheduled a serious meeting for something like that. Nope, not us! It was just a normal phone call, no different than asking what I want for dinner. I bet none of y'all got a cemetery plot for your 27th birthday (which is MONDAY!! yay!). :P Oh yeah, I know you're jealous.

If you want to chat about more M/M goodness or read about the family of geckos in my living room (a Yahoo Group Exclusive), don't forget to join the Yahoo group. If anything, join for the photo albums. Seriously.

Don't forget to post your questions for my WICKED GENTLEMEN review!

I almost forgot! Check out this bizarre and disturbing post James Buchanan wrote on the Slash & Burn blog about a certain kind of kink. It is NOT safe for work or kids, and it is NOT for those with weak hearts or sensitive stomachs. But OMG, it's fucking hilarious!!!

Dancing Condoms!!!

Because no Thursday is complete without a dancing condom cartoon.

(Only ten pages left in WICKED GENTLEMEN! *breathes a sigh of relief* Maybe, if you're very nice to me, I'll review it tomorrow. Maybe.)

The Hump Day Special

Wednesday. The day we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the week is half over. Thank goodness. This has been a hellish week for me at work. I can't wait for the weekend. I live for Saturdays because that's my day to sleep past noon. That's right, I said past noon.

Last night I came up with some fabulous ideas for today's blog post. Did I write them down? No. I said to myself, "I'll remember. No problem." I should know better. Well, now I can't recall even one of my fabulous ideas, so you're stuck with random ramblings (a.k.a. "the usual").

Last night I finished GUILTY PLEASURES, the first Anita Blake novel by Laurell K. Hamilton. I've had it on my shelf since last September, and I kept passing it over. Now I wish I'd picked it up months ago! Great book. Lots of action, a heroine that's a smartass and a likeable human being (with real feelings and everything), and lots of hot men. I didn't even miss the romance. *gasp* Did I just say that? My friends tell me the series fizzles out toward the end, but I don't worry about that. I usually can't read past book 3 of a series anyway. I have a tiny attention span and a fear of commitment. Bad combination, I know. The whole time I was reading the book, I kept wondering why I never heard of this book while I was in college. Well, that's because it came out when I was in junior high. At age 13 I was reading Janette Oke and V. C. Andrews (weird combo, I know...but I've never claimed to be normal). I never would have even considered vampires. I'm so glad I grew out of that. Oh, and did any of you ever watch the U.S. version of Queer as Folk? I keep picturing Anita Blake as Michelle Clunie, the actress that played Melanie on the show.

Now I can get back to WICKED GENTLEMEN, the book I dropped for GUILTY PLEASURES. To be honest, I've had a hard time getting back into WICKED GENTLEMEN. Not because it's not good. In fact, it's one of the best M/M books I've ever read. The men are wonderful, the premise is unique, the writing is absolutely marvelous, and even the book itself is physically beautiful. But for some reason, when I've been wanting a book for nearly a year and finally get it, I'm always a little afraid to start it, then even more afraid to finish it. Plus, now everyone is expecting a long detailed review (which I hadn't planned on writing in the first place), and it's stressing me out. Leave me alone and let me read my book in peace! There, I said it. LOL

Okay, clearly I still have "homework" issues left over from high school and college. I apologize for the outburst. I'll try to work on that. ;) (Oh dear, it appears that I have frightened my friends. I was only kidding...I promise I won't bite anyone that asks me about WICKED GENTLEMEN. Unless you want me to, of course. Meow.)

I still have a ton of e-books to read. I finished SECRETS AND LIES by Amanda Young last week. It's a great M/M vampire book. Amanda writes great books with sexy protagonists, unique and interesting storylines, and of course smokin' hot mansex. And boy, does she know how to write manipulative assholes. ;)

I still need to start BLUE RUIN 2: CLOSE TO ME by Katrina Strauss. It's killing me to know it's just waiting on my hard drive and I haven't had time to read it. Maybe I'll get around to that today.

Oh, I almost forgot! I finally updated my GoodReads Library! I've read 214 books since July 1 of last year, not including 50-something e-books that aren't in the GoodReads database. I have 178 books on my TBR shelf, plus about 10 e-books. It took me three days to get everything catalogued, but I had fun doing it. If you've never used GoodReads, go check it out. You can be my buddy. :)

Don't forget to check out Jessewave's blog. She and Mary M read the entire Adrien English series by Josh Lanyon over the weekend and they co-wrote a great review and analysis of the books.

And last but certainly not least, go check out Madame Butterfly's fantastic review of one of my favorite books, DARK DESIGNS by Madelynne Ellis. I mentioned the book on here a few weeks ago, but Madame Butterfly's review is so much better and more thorough than my scattered thoughts. If you're a fan of yaoi or just a fan of crazy and wonderful contemporary erotic romance, you must read DARK DESIGNS.

Whew, that was long. I talk too much!

By the way, the tent cartoon at the top of this post apparently came from a Durex condom ad. I have no idea what it's supposed to mean. Shall we play a fun game in the Comments and try to interpret it? Heh...this should be interesting.

Is it Friday yet?

There's nothing quite like a Monday in the world of insurance after a long holiday weekend. I think it's because everyone has an extra day to stew over their problems, and extra time to practice their snarky phone speeches. Whew. It's nearly 11:00 a.m. and I've finally answered all my voicemails and taken care of the morning stuff that I usually finish by 9:45. Now I have time for the really important stuff, like blogging!

Hubby wanted to make this past holiday weekend a "movie weekend", and I let him choose our entertainment for Thursday-Saturday. Y'all already know we saw WANTED Thursday night and I found it horrifyingly loud and bloody (though hubby thought it was "awesome"), and that my moviegoing experience was enhanced by a nest of noisy baby rats in the wall directly behind me. You can read my rant here if you'd like.

My husband actually picked a total of four bad movies this weekend, but at least the other three were rentals. Let's see...hubby rented STRAYS, a terrible movie from very early in Vin Diesel's career. Awful. He also picked CLOVERFIELD, which would have been pretty cool if not for the motion sickness-inducing home video format. Hubby's third and final pick was 10,000BC before I grounded him from selecting any more of our movies for the weekend. It was LOL stupid. My husband has shockingly terrible really odd taste in movies, so the fact that even he was making fun of 10,000BC really says something.

But then it was my turn to pick out rentals. My husband has been teasing me about all the gay movies I've been watching lately, and he's been telling me that I've been "unfair to the ladies". That's such BS. He just wants to watch chicks make out! Whatever. Ever the lovely and agreeable wife, I decided to rent Season 1/Disc 1 of THE L WORD. Wow, it's a really good show! I've already put the rest of Season 1 on my Blockbuster Online queue.

My other movie choice was Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY, a very cute Oscar-winning anime movie from Japan. SPIRITED AWAY is really strange (probably makes more sense if you're familiar with Japanese lore and culture), but very, very good. I highly recommend it for cartoon fans, especially if you like anime. It is all in English, voiced by fairly well-known actors and actresses, so you don't have to worry about subtitles. It's one I'd like to have in my collection.

Now, on to books.

Last Thursday on my eXtasy Books shopping spree, I bought a book by D. J. Manly entitled SO MUCH MORE THAN NAKED. In this story, a man named Darcy needs a date for his younger brother Martin's wedding. Darcy (who has never dated but swears he's straight) doesn't want to bother with finding a date, so Martin decides to browse the personal ads to find a date for Darcy. Martin sees an ad for a woman that seems very nice, so he replies and sets up a date for Darcy. When Darcy shows up for the date with the mysterious woman, he realizes that his date is not with a woman at all, but with a Dom named Ryan that is looking for his perfect submissive. There are quite a few plot holes in this book, the BDSM theme was pretty ridiculous and far-fetched, and the overall story is rather cheesy and unrealistic, but it obviously wasn't too cheesy (or maybe I was just in a generous mood) because I read all 160 pages in two short sittings. At the very least, it was entertaining, and the characters were decent. The love scenes were nice, too. I'll give this one 3.75 stars.

I read a nice little yaoi (m/m) manga entitled THE LILY AND THE ROSE by Dany&Dany. The story begins with two young men getting caught in a compromising situation together at school. They part ways, and one (Christophe) becomes a priest while the other (Alain) spends his life wanting to avenge his mother's death. Later, Alain is hired by an evil Cardinal to try to tempt Christophe into an affair. The two men reunite, and things get crazy from there. The story is really confusing, but the artwork is nice. However, on some pages it is obvious that hand drawings have been mixed with computer graphics, and the two forms don't mesh well at all. I give the manga 3.5 stars, mostly because the drawings of Alain and Christophe were gorgeous. It was good, but not a keeper, and I'm glad I bought it at a discount.

I started another yaoi manga last night called BOND(Z) by Toko Kawai that is pretty cute so far. I read the first of four stories in that one, and I enjoyed it. I hear the other three stories are even better, so I look forward to finishing those. I'm keeping the book on the coffee table, and I plan to read a little bit here and there. I'll probably post a more thorough review when I finish the whole book. It's fairly explicit (the drawings show genitalia), though not as explicit as others I've seen. It's more graphic than the light boylove/shounen-ai mangas, but less graphic than hard yaoi, if that makes sense. The artwork is nice, and while the men do look pretty young (as in all yaoi manga), they at least don't look like children.

Oh, and I finally got back to reading GUILTY PLEASURES, the first Anita Blake novel by Laurell K. Hamilton. I started it a couple of weeks ago but stopped just a few pages in because I got distracted by another book (WICKED GENTLEMEN by Ginn Hale, which is wonderful). I read nearly half of GUILTY PLEASURES last night and I really like it. I don't see myself glomming the entire series right away, but I probably will read the next couple of books in the not too distant future. Anita is more obnoxious than I usually like a heroine to be, and LKH's choppy style took some getting used to, but I really do like the book overall. The men in the book more than make up for Anita's snarkiness.

Be sure to check out the review that Katie(babs) wrote on SAM'S CREED by Sarah McCarty. The review is great, but the really fun part is the obscene e-mail discussion that comes after it. Best post ever. I think it deserves one of Lisabea's infamous NosePicker awards. Speaking of Katie(babs) and Lisabea, they and a few other bloggers have started a blog where they will discuss their upcoming trip to this year's RWA conference. Go check it out.

I also just found this really fun post on gay comics at Sarah's blog. Not just manga, but actual GAY COMICS. Is that awesome or what? I'm such a nerd...I clicked on every single link in the post and now I have at least eight windows up on my computer right now. Sarah's a super cool manlovin' Kiwi chick and her blog is teh bomb (and always filled with yummy manpics), so go visit her and tell her I said howdy.

And how could I forget Jessewave's Adrien English Marathon? If you're a Fanyon or just a fan of gay mysteries, go check it out.

It is now 1:40 and I'm finally wrapping this up. I hate it when work interferes with blogging! Well, kids, that's all I've got for now. Have a wonderful week!
